Best Health Achievement 2021

We are delighted to announce the winner in the Best Health Achievement category.

GMCR Runners

GMCR RunnersGMCR runners is a local, free community running group in Salford. They offer full support to those looking to lose weight, through their couch to 5k programmes, and offer a vibrant community to those looking to make friends and be more active. For the last two years they have grown from supporting 40 people to a community of over 900, who they keep in touch with and challenge regularly. The group has adapted to the Covid crisis by setting challenges for members as part of online teams to keep them connected and involved. These challenges included VE Day celebrations and a suffragette movement challenge. Members of the group also delivered food parcels to vulnerable residents during the lockdown periods.

The other finalists were:

Dancing with Dementia

Dancing with DementiaDancing with Dementia enriches the lives of people living with dementia, as well as providing vital support to their families and carers. The group runs longstanding monthly dances at the Grand Palais in Swinton. During the pandemic, it has not been possible for the dances to take place. So the group have been creative and resourceful in finding new ways to support their community, arranging for hot meals to be delivered to members, as a way to ensure that members remain connected and see a friendly face during such difficult times.

Kimberley Bond

Kimberley BondKim runs local Salford social enterprise Visit from the Stork, which helps parents of all ages, by running schemes such as Be Open on Breastfeeding in Salford. Kim works especially hard to support those who are in the most vulnerable or difficult situations. When the pandemic started Kim launched Stork Support, to supply support packages to families experiencing any kind of hardship across Salford and Greater Manchester. This project has provided invaluable assistance to many families with new babies during the pandemic. In October, Stork Support passed the 1000th parcel delivery milestone, and has helped hundreds of families along the way.

Mark Frith / Growing Togetherness
