Community Group of the Year 2021
We are delighted to announce the winner in the Community Group of the Year category.
Salford Loaves and Fishes
Salford Loaves and Fishes is a charity that does tremendous work to help vulnerable people and reduce rough sleeping in Salford. The charity warmly welcomes anyone needing their support and offers food, showering and washing facilities, clothes, support and advice. Prior to the pandemic Salford Loaves and Fishes would serve well over a hundred people lunch each day. They have responded brilliantly to the pandemic, quickly finding COVID safe ways to distribute food parcels, clothing and other essential items. With so many of the city’s public buildings closed, the Loaves and Fishes centre has also provided a vital space for rough sleepers to access NHS and support services.
The other finalists were:
Europia
Europia is a community organisation that does great work providing advice, support, and wellbeing programmes for EU nationals in Salford and Greater Manchester. Throughout the pandemic Europia has run projects to help residents in Salford, including launching the Europia COVID-19 Emergency fund, providing the Polish over 50s support line, and launching the Starting a Conversation about Dementia scheme. These projects have provided vital support to residents during an extremely challenging period.
Salford Forum for Refugees and People seeking asylum
Salford Forum for Refugees and people seeking asylum provides vital support to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. The forum provides advice, information and guidance to refugees and people seeking asylum as they navigate through the UK system. The group also provides food vouchers to address food poverty, advocates on behalf of refugees and people seeking asylum in Salford, and provides online support to address social isolation and loneliness.
The Life Centre
The Life Centre is a charity based in Langworthy that works to support families and transform lives. The Life Centre has done some amazing work throughout the pandemic. Volunteers from the charity have provided weekly door to door deliveries of ‘Good Thoughts Bags’ throughout lockdown, the summer holidays and October half term. Each weekly bag contained food and craft activities aimed at helping families talk about their feelings and look after their mental health in this unprecedented time. The weekly deliveries also provide isolated families with a chance to have a chat with one of their friendly volunteers.
