Spirit of Salford Special Recognition 2021

We are delighted to announce the winner in the Spirit of Salford Special Recognition category.

The Mask Project

The Mask ProjectThe Mask Project was initiated by Salford Royal Foundation Trust and delivered by a dedicated team of local volunteers, supported by the Hamilton Davies Trust. This was set up during the early stages of the Pandemic to help the NHS when PPE was in short supply. The volunteers were recruited to help make shields/visors for local hospital staff. The project grew to have 50 volunteers, who worked tirelessly to provide masks for 5 hospitals across the north west including Salford Royal. By the end of the project, the team had manufactured over 30,000 visors. The volunteers were so successful, that they were also asked to provide additional support for hospitals by labelling bags for patients and completed over 5,000 bags in a matter of days. The project provided vital assistance to the NHS and gave hospital staff and patients confidence and security at an extremely frightening time.

The other finalists were:

Beth Myring

Beth MyringBeth, who manages the LifeCentre Salford charity in Langworthy, has done outstanding work to tackle holiday hunger in Salford for several years. During lockdown Beth visited 70 families every week delivering Good Thoughts bags, which included breakfast cereals, fruit, and fun activities for the families. Beth did this each week, taking many hours in preparing the bags and delivering them, taking the time to talk to each family and listen to their concerns. All whilst having her own family to look after at home, and her husband being a key worker in a school. Beth has been amazing during this time and kept her focus on providing for others and serving the families most in need in our community.

Milk Aid

Milk AidAt the beginning of the first lockdown a husband and wife team set up Milk Aid, to deliver food parcels in Salford. They supported the elderly, vulnerable and anyone isolating. They also worked with local schools to identify children/families who needed extra support, providing food hampers during school holidays for over 300 families, approaching local food businesses to ask if they would provide lunches for vulnerable families over the Christmas holidays. They have worked tirelessly to support vulnerable people in their community at the most difficult of times.

Salford Mutual Aid Coalition

The coalition has supported people across Salford to access help, collected food donations and distributed food parcels, and distributed furniture, household essentials, toys, mother and baby items, clothes, and books to vulnerable groups in need of support.
