Volunteer of the Year 2021
We are delighted to announce the winners in the Volunteer of the Year category.
Alfrieda Kindon
Alfrieda exemplifies the spirit of Salford and has dedicated over 40 years of her life to voluntary services for the diverse communities of Salford. A pioneer and visionary, she created a new community rugby league club in 1980, turning derelict premises in the Peel Green into a valued community facility. A mentor and role model to the many children and adults who have been a part of the club, Alfrieda is passionate about inclusivity and has a great track record of integrating vulnerable young people into the club community and the sport of Rugby League.
Steve Finbow
Steve works for Salix Homes and lives in Higher Broughton. During the pandemic, Steve has been an inspiring and energetic volunteer, providing help and support to vulnerable Salford residents. Steve has been heavily involved in making welfare calls to residents and has been a volunteer co-ordinator for local food poverty charity That Bread and Butter Thing, recruiting and managing volunteers to distribute food parcels in the community. Steve’s enthusiasm and commitment helped the charity respond to a huge increase in demand as a direct result of the pandemic, delivering approximately 80,000 meals to 615 families in Salford.
The other finalists were:
Connor James
As a volunteer Head of Events, Connor is a vital asset to Salford Pride and has been instrumental in delivering a wide range of support, educational and inclusive events for the LGBT+ community of Salford. Connor truly reflects the values of Salford Pride in championing community, inclusion and equality. Following the pandemic-related cancellation of Salford Pride’s flagship event, The Pink Picnic, Connor worked tirelessly to bring a digital project, “The Pink Picnic Digital” to life. His professionalism and hard work led to an inclusive and professional event that was delivered online, helping members of our community, tackling social isolation and delivering an important sense of community cohesion in a time of great need.
Diane Hesford
Diane has taken on many different voluntary roles to help the community in Irlam and Cadishead. As secretary to the voluntary committee of Lady James Hall in Irlam, Diane has been integral to building up the facility – based in Princes Park – into a hub of community activities including keep fit, community gardening, yoga, art and pilates. Diane has also volunteered for Salford’s Health Improvement Service in Irlam and Cadishead during the pandemic, picking up shopping and prescriptions for vulnerable people. Diane was always there, volunteering to help local people. She is caring, generous, and immensely practical.
